The Eastern Freeway is a key piece of infrastructure that provides access between the Eastern Suburbs, Inner Suburbs and CBD of Melbourne. Renowned for its ten lane width at its western end (still a notorious intersection for traffic), it connects to Alexandra Parade at one end, and the Eastlink Tollway at the eastern end. The 18km freeway was opened to traffic in stages, with the final stage completed in 1997. It notably returned to the political spotlight throughout the late-2014 state election, when the Liberal government proposed the extension of the freeway westerly as the East-West Link.
